an introduction
plus where you can find my work elsewhere
I’m Jodie, a writer, researcher, and general mysticism enthusiast.
This substack is a space for my research-based writing projects on art and literature inspired by, and/or created with, mystic and occult means. Whilst I still publish through traditional academic venues, I’m opening up eternity in your hand to make parts of my research more accessible to the public. While my PhD focused specifically on the artistic circles of William Blake and the Celtic Twilight, my professional and personal expertise covers a much wider scope of artists and movements. In addition to scholarly, yet accessible articles, my substack will also offer (again, research-informed) opinion pieces on subjects within my professional expertise, and my personal orbit as a writer-practitioner.
Since I began my PhD research in 2017, and after completing the doctorate in 2022, I’ve had equal interest in my work from people and groups both inside and outside the academy. This can, in part, be explained by the general revival of cultural interest in esotericism, tarot, astrology, and alternative spirituality from the early-mid 2010s onwards. However, drawing from my own research, which spans the arts in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, I can tell you there’s always been a human receptivity to these topics: it simply waxes and wanes with the times.
I look forward to sharing my work with you. I’ll post weekly writing here, and you can keep up with me via my other socials as well. Keep in touch.
